Superlist: New list management from Wunderlist developer

It was one of the first success stories of the iOS App Store: The Wunderlist app combined cross-device synchronization and teamwork capabilities with an intuitive and beautiful interface that was available on many platforms. After signing up with an email address, it was easy to create group projects and check them off together. The Mac app received an Apple Design Award in 2013. But in 2015, the happy project management came to an end: Microsoft bought the manufacturer “6Wunderkinder” and integrated a reduced version as Microsoft To-Do into its Office 365 offering. Wunderlist was not further developed – in 2020 Microsoft shut down the servers.

As early as 2021, company founder Christian Reber announced that he would like to buy back the rights to the app. Even if that didn’t work out, he’s back now – with Superlist. The focus of the new development is once again a reminder list. When you try it out for the first time, you can see that Superlist has been optimized for both the touchscreen and keyboard input. On the Mac you can quickly write down a list of new tasks without using the mouse: Enter starts a new entry, the Tab key creates a subentry. The tickable entries are structured using subheadings and enriched with comments. Anyone who invites additional users to the team can assign tasks to them directly.

No Windows version yet

The basic account (free forever) allows you to share five lists with five users each, attachments of up to 10 MB and a maximum of 500 MB of total storage space. For 10 euros per month you can expand the storage space to 25 GB, share an infinite number of lists with a maximum of 25 users and use the on-board AI to create lists. Currently supports Superlist iOS, Android and macOS (from 10.15). For other platforms, Superlist offers a web app. To register, you use either an email address, an Apple ID or a Google account. What is striking is that there is currently no native Windows version, and there is also no integration of any Microsoft accounts.

Alternative to memories?

However, development has not stopped – Apple’s in-house app now has many of the functions that made Wunderlist so attractive over a decade ago. The reminders app allows shared list management. A reminder can be tagged with keywords, time and location-specific clues. They can be accessed via the iCloud website can also be used in the browser. All you need is an Apple ID – and you must have owned an Apple device at least once: The web-based iCloud account includes notes, contacts, iCloud Drive and iWork, but the reminders are missing.
