Google Maps now integrates weather maps

Finally a new functionality appears in Google Maps for Android one that can help you better plan trips and trips.

After a period in which iOS users were already enjoying this feature, Google has finally decided to bring the integration of meteorological data to the Android version of its popular maps application.

This novelty, shown by 9to5google.com, introduces a small window below the search bar that shows the icon of the current weather, temperature and air quality index (AQI) of the location we are viewing on the map. Expanding this window provides additional information such as hourly temperature forecasts, adding a level of detail useful for planning outdoor activities or trips.

It is important to mention that this update is being implemented gradually. This means that not all devices will have immediate access to these new features, suggesting a phased rollout. For those eager to try it, I recommend updating the app or trying to close and reopen it, although this does not guarantee its immediate availability because some activations depend on Google’s server side.

The inclusion of weather information directly in Google Maps It responds to a broader trend by the company to integrate efficient search tools into its applications. An earlier example of this direction was the introduction of Multisearch in Google Lens, which allows you to use combinations of mixed media, such as images and text, for more precise searches and reduce the need to switch between different applications.

The weather information window remains visible while we move around the map and disappears when selecting an item or placing a pin. In addition to the current temperature and AQI, the window provides hourly forecasts, textual descriptions of current conditions, “wind chill” temperatures, and the expected maximum and minimum temperatures for the day. Interestingly, the icons used differ from those of the Google Weather app, but the functionality is intuitive.

Another notable aspect is the layer of AQI overlay (Air Quality Index), which is displayed on a heat map and provides a local scale of AQI along with a description of current levels. This feature is especially valuable for those who are sensitive to air quality or planning outdoor activities with greater environmental awareness.

The integration of these meteorological data in Google Maps It greatly facilitates travel planning, allowing us to make informed decisions about when and how to travel, as well as what to take with us. This functionality eliminates the need to consult external sources to obtain a weather forecast, optimizing our user experience within the Google application itself.
